SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention has announced the construction of a new rotating gallery, a dynamic addition to its existing space at 1312 Bay Street that will offer curious visitors a fresh perspective on history and invention. Scheduled to open in late spring 2025, this gallery represents a major step forward in SPARK’s ongoing expansion in Bellingham.

The rotating gallery is designed to highlight artifacts and exhibits from SPARK’s extensive collection that have not previously been on display. While the museum’s permanent galleries focus on pivotal historical and technological milestones, this new space will provide the flexibility to explore additional stories, moments and themes that enrich the museum’s narrative.
“Adding a rotating gallery gives us the opportunity to showcase more of our collection in the future,” said Abby Whatley, director of programs. “It will also allow us to share fresh, engaging displays with visitors and feature exhibits that reflect our community’s interests.”
Funding and exhibit gifts get gallery off to a good start
The inaugural exhibit, set to open in late spring 2025, will spotlight the creative works of local artist and tinkerer Kevin Jones and honor the legacy of Mindport Exhibits, a beloved local institution that closed in November 2024 after nearly three decades.
“We’re grateful that our Arts District neighbors at Mindport helped fund the construction of the new rotating gallery and that its executive director, Tallie Jones, gifted us with many wonderful interactive displays,” said Whatley.

After being featured in the rotating gallery, a number of Mindport’s exhibits will transition to Wonderlab—an interactive exhibit space that is under construction on the second floor of SPARK. Wonderlab will give children and families a place to foster learning through hands-on exploration and community programs.
Whether on display in the rotating gallery or in Wonderlab, Whatley said the community will continue to have access to some of their favorite Mindport exhibits by visiting SPARK in the years to come.
Admission to the rotating gallery will be included with regular museum entry, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy its offerings. Exhibits will be refreshed every 18-24 months, giving locals and travelers alike ample time to visit and explore.
Expansion aligns with the museum’s vision
The new rotating gallery is part of SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention’s larger expansion efforts, aimed at enhancing visitors’ experiences and making the museum a hub for exploration and learning. Ongoing fundraising efforts, generous donors and grants from State of Washington Tourism and the Eleanor and Henry Jansen Foundation have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
